Wheat Grinders - Types, Prices, Usage, Recommendations

!±8± Wheat Grinders - Types, Prices, Usage, Recommendations

If you are anything like me, the idea of buying, let alone actually USING a wheat grinder can be pretty intimidating. I am determined to accumulate a healthy-sized food storage and wheat is going to play a big role in that. I am also a fan of the mantra "store what you eat and eat what you store". Thus it quickly became apparent to me that I needed to do some heavy duty research in order to uncover all the mysteries surrounding "wheat grinders" or "grain mills" as they are officially called. With the help of internet research, some hands on research at several neighbors' houses, and multiple failed attempts in the kitchen, I have come up with a pretty good summary of what you need to know.

Types of Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Pros

Inexpensive Can be used with no power source Small to store
Cons

SLOW to grind (mine took 6 minutes to grind one cup of flour) Except for the very high-end models, you cannot grind a fine flour Inconvenient (messy and hard to fit a large bowl underneath)
KitchenAid Attachments

Pros

Less expensive than an electric grinder Small to store Convenient to use and then mix bread in the same machine
Cons

I have heard from multiple sources that these units will BREAK your KitchenAid mixer Not as fast at grinding as electric grinders
Electric Wheat Grinders

Pros

Grinds very fast Useful for many types of grains, beans, nuts, etc. Easy to select how coarse or fine to grind, and has a large range
Cons

Fairly expensive, even for the lower-end models Must have a generator or battery pack to use with no electricity (unless you buy a high end model that comes with a manual crank) A large appliance to store in your kitchen
Prices of Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Low: -30 models will not grind flour, only coarse corn meal, etc. Not very useful. Medium: -5 is a good price range. Back to Basics Grain Mill is . It can grind fine enough for bread flour but not for very fine cake flour. Wonder Junior is higher-priced at 9 but it can grind into cake flour. High: Up to 0 for the Country Living Grain Mill. It is quicker than other manual grinders and is able to grind a fine cake flour.
KitchenAid Attachments

0-120, some may be used on any stand mixer.
Electric Wheat Grinders

Low: Under 0 for grinders such as the Blendtec Grain Mill. Its drawbacks are it is very noisy and cannot do very coarse grinds. Medium: 0-0 can get you a great grinder. The two most popular electric grinders are the WonderMill and the NutriMill. In my tests I found the WonderMill to be faster, quieter, cleaner, and easier to store. And priced at 9 it is even cheaper than the NutriMill which is 9. High: Over 0 is an unnecessary amount to spend in my opinion. There are heavy duty models out there but you can get the job done with the mid-range models.
How To Use Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Attach wheat grinder to your counter top Place a bowl underneath Pour the wheat in the funnel Turn the crank (for a LONG time) Wheat will filter into the bowl below
Electric Wheat Grinders

Select how fine or coarse you want to grind Turn on the machine Pour the wheat in the top Wait for it to grind into flour (super fast) Turn off the machine and pull out your canister of wheat
How To Use Fresh Ground Whole Wheat

Whole wheat bread can be delicious! I have gone through a lot of recipes trying to find the perfect balance of flavor, nutrition, texture, etc. for my wheat bread. Experiment with different recipes and types of wheat until you find what your family prefers. We liked using hard white wheat in a recipe that included gluten and oatmeal. Pancakes even your kids will love! I took an IHOP corn cakes recipe and simply swapped all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour and it was amazing. My kids ate 3 each at one meal. They are delicious drizzled with honey over top. Whole wheat oatmeal cookies you can't resist. I haven't tried any of these recipes yet but several of my friends said they prefer whole wheat cookies to regular cookies. Who wouldn't want an excuse to make cookies, hey it's rotating your food storage. Much much more. I grind up a large Tupperware full of hard white wheat flour and store it in my freezer (it retains the nutrients that way). Whenever I do any baking I replace half or all of the flour called for with my whole wheat flour. If it is as good or better I add that recipe to my food storage recipe binder. It's a great way to experiment until you find what works for you.
My Recommendations

Emergency-Only Usage

If you are planning to use your food storage and wheat grinder only if an emergency situation arises, it is not worth the expense and hassle of buying and storing an electric grinder. At a minimum you should get the Back to Basics Grain Mill but I would highly recommend splurging for the Wonder Junior.
Every-Day Usage

If you plan to "store what you eat and eat what you store" I highly recommend the WonderMill Grain Mill electric grinder. If you are not planning to find an alternative power source for an emergency situation, then eventually pick up a Back to Basics Grain Mill as well. The price of these two combined are still cheaper than high-end electric grinders that have a manual crank option, and the functionality of the WonderMill is better for frequent usage.

What is the Best Cookware Set For the Kitchen

!±8± What is the Best Cookware Set For the Kitchen

People want to know whats the best cookware set for the kitchen? It is true that you can find really good deals on complete cookware sets but it is no bargain if you end up with pieces that you will never use when preparing meals.

Before buying any cookware try and define what it is you are trying to accomplish with your cookware. This will help to in determining whats the best cookware set to buy for your kitchen.

I prefer cookware that is more functional and can perform more than one cooking task when preparing a meal. Things like browning or searing meat on the stovetop and then finishing the cooking process in the oven all in same piece of cookware. To be able to do this style of cooking I would find cookware that is oven safe and can withstand high temperatures including the handles and lids.

Other examples of cookware that can perform many tasks is enameled cast iron cookware. This type of cookware is good for performing many tasks as simple as preparing sauces like spaghetti sauce on the stovetop or cooking a roast in the oven.

Another mutitasker to consider would be a stainless steel stockpot with basket insert. You could use this pot for making homemade soups, and with the basket inserted make your favorite pastas and can also be used as a steamer for steaming vegetables and seafoods.

This method of cooking will also cut down on clean up time because you are minimizing the amount of cookware you will be using when preparing meals.

One other piece of cookware I keep on hand is at least one good nonstick skillet. Although this may not fit into the category as a multitasker it is one that is great to use when making eggs and is idea for preparing things that maybe messy and sticky. Also great if your're on a diet and want to prepare low fat meals.

Also one thing to consider if being able wash your pots and pans in the dishwasher is a priority then plain cast iron and anodized aluminum is not a good choice. You then might want to consider stainless steel pots and pans.

I have many pots and pans but when I finally adopted this method of cooking I typically only use a few pieces of cookware when preparing meals in the kitchen. I also take this same approach when looking for cooking utensils. This is just my personal choice and approach when I am looking for the best cookware for the kitchen.

DJ Tips - Keys to Success Or Failure With Your DJ Equipment Speakers - Good Sounds and Good Life

!±8± DJ Tips - Keys to Success Or Failure With Your DJ Equipment Speakers - Good Sounds and Good Life

There are a number of keys that determine the success or failure you will experience with your DJ equipment speakers. You need to make sure the power in your setup is matched between the amplifier and the speakers. You also must pay close attention to the placement of your speakers at your performance. Also, the wiring you use can either help or hurt your sound and equipment durability.

Mismatched Power

There are any number of newbie mistakes that DJs make when they are just starting out. The first of these many common errors has to do with the performance system of their mixer, amplifier, and speakers. It is very prevalent to find that the components in use are no where near being evenly matched with each other. And, we are not talking about the color of the cabinets. I will explain. Let us say that you are using a speaker pair that is rated in the range of 300 watts power (continuous) that also are rated at a peak power of 600 watts. These stats will give you an operating range to keep in mind when you are matching the amplifier that you should use with these speakers. Then, you need to find out if your speakers are at the impedance of eight ohms or four ohms. Next, check the power rating on the amplifier you are using to see if there is a match of power ratings at that specific impedance, or what you will commonly call the load. This is essential for you to keep in mind. You would never believe how easy is is to damage your speakers because of having an amplifier that produces inadequate, and insufficient power. If you are pushing your amplifier to the point that it has very little top or head room, which you may call speaker reserve power, you will find that the amp is subject to clipping. Clipping occurs when the amplifier sends a distorted signal to the speaker. The cause in our example of the clipping was using an underpowered component in your system. The result of this mismatch could be destroyed (blown) woofers and/or tweeters.

Improper speaker placement

Placement of speakers has been debated since the days of senate speeches on the steps of the early Roman capital building. While there are no exact principles that every one can agree on, there are some variations that work successfully time and again. The most common contributor to changes in speaker setup is the variation in room design and decoration from location to location. Here are some basics to get started setting up your system to have the most chance of success.

First, put yourself mentally into a location for a performance. Now, imagine that the speakers are on the right and left sides of your console. In our imaginary setup, put your console right in the center. Again, in our perfect world, the speakers are facing directly away from you and toward the crowd. Now, we want an optimum starting orientation for the lateral projection, the vertical projection, and to eliminate feedback. As far as the microphone goes, it should be place at a right angle to the imaginary line drawn between the left and right speaker. Of course, it should face away from the speakers toward you. Keep this ideal in mind, so that your microphone will maintain a maximum capability and volume characteristics.

Now, consider that the speaker horns may have a lateral dispersion pattern somewhere between 90 to 120 degrees. Also, the speakers could have a vertical dispersion of somewhere between 40 to 90 degrees. If you can imagine a dispersion pattern much like a spray of water out from your speakers, that is your range of sound that is emerging from the speaker. The thing to keep in mind is that this pattern is important for your microphone placement. If you place the speakers slightly further back, or you angle the speakers inward, then the microphone will have a tendency to be susceptible to feedback. The feedback is the system picking up and amplifying higher frequencies in a loop. You can avoid the problem with careful placements.

Here is another tip that comes from experience on the job. Mount your speakers on a stand in order to counter the fact that your speech is going toward the mid sections of your crowd, rather than into their ears. You want the best clarity possible, so this is an answer to that problem. You will probably lose the resonance of the bass range coming off the floor, but in reality, it would be better to use sub-woofers anyway as an alternative to the floor. Even as you properly place the speakers, there will usually be a small area in between, right in front of you, that could be called the dead zone. And no, that is not because there is no cell phone reception. It is a byproduct of an otherwise well place speaker system setup.

Improper wiring

Your wire that you connect your equipment with is critical. It is the lifeblood of the system since it carries the sound among the components. The gauge of this wire is super important. Keep in mind that the smaller the number, the larger the gauge. You want to match the gauge somewhat to the application. The farther the wire run, the larger the gauge should be. For shorter runs of 50 feet or less, 14 gauge wire is what we recommend. 16 is all right, but 14 is the preferred. Generally, the more wire you use, the more conductivity you have. so, is you are using too small a wire for larger distances, you may be losing sound. For 100 feet plus, you should consider 8 gauge. The extra copper aids in the transmission of sound. All this will make for a more durable setup, possibly giving your gear a longer life.

KitchenAid Stand Mixer - Which Model Is the Best Stand Mixer for You?

!±8± KitchenAid Stand Mixer - Which Model Is the Best Stand Mixer for You?

KitchenAid stand mixers are an icon in the kitchen. They are heavy, sturdy, simplistic in design and beautiful. There are currently four lines of KitchenAid stand mixers to choose from, the Classic series, Artisan Series, Pro Line and Commercial 5 Series. Whether you are a beginning chef, a weekend warrior, a serious home chef or a restaurateur, there is a KitchenAid model that is built just right for you.

KM25G0XWH - Commercial 5 series

The commercial series, as the name implies was designed for commercial use. This model was intended for restaurant grade abuse. There is no reason why a home cook can't use the KitchenAid commercial use, if you have money to spare. The commercial 5 series is the most expensive of all the KitchenAid line.

If you have been used to the tilt-head stand, then it might be a small issue that the Commercial line does not tilt. It features, instead a bowl-lift stand.

KL26M8XOB - Pro Line series

There a is a grey area between the Pro Line series and the Commercial 5 series. Both the Pro Line and Commercial series are characterized by powerful motors, ranging from 400 watts to 575 watts which means you can pretty much whip and knead to your heart's content without worrying that the equipment will overheat or conk down.

The Pro Line was designed for serious home chef in mind, or probably small restaurants/cafes. Like the commercial line, the Pro Line series also does not have the tilt-stand. It has the bowl-lift stand.

KSM75WH - Classic series

The icon of all KitchenAid mixers is the classic series. This mixer has made its way into a lot of people's kitchen. It is the most affordable of all the KitchenAids.

Being an entry level mixer, you cannot make the mistake that it is the least capable, it is not. This mixer is capable of handling most of your baking chores with ease. It gives you enough power to cream butter, knead dough and occasionally your loaf of bread. It may not be a good idea to knead loaves of bread in succession without giving the mixer a breather in between batches--remember, this was designed for entry level use. If you need make a lot of bread in a short amount of time, then the classic series is not for you. You may need to consider either the Pro Line series or the Artisan series.

The Classic series features the well loved tilt-head design, so access to the contents of the bowl is easy.

If you are buying a stand mixer for the first time or baking is a new found hobby for you, then the Classic series is a good place to start with stand mixers. The Classic series is a serious piece of equipment without breaking the bank.

KSM150PSER - Artisan Series

The Artisan series is an upgrade of the classic series. This line of mixer was designed for the more serious home chef. It's motor is a slightly upgraded, more powerful version of the ones you will find in the Classic series. This means, that you can do everything you were able to do with the Classic series like whip meringue, cream butter, knead dough and prepare loaves of bread--but you will be able to do so with more power and your Artisan series can take a bit more punishment than your Classic series.

The Artisan series features the tilt-head mechanism that you have grown to love with the classic series. The Artisan series was not called Artisan for nothing, it is the only line in the KitchenAid mixers to offer 25 colors to choose from. Now, there is no problem mixing and matching your kitchen theme with your stand mixer.
